Finding the Perfect Skincare Products: 5 Things You Should Consider

Our skin’s appearance reflects just how well we take care of ourselves: it can reveal our eating habits, the level of hydration, restfulness, even our mental state. In order for your skin to stay healthy and attractive, you have to take care of it both on the inside and on the outside. While giving your body what it needs comes naturally (with proper nutrition and optimal water intake), you may be puzzled about how to choose the right products in order to provide it with nutrients on the outside, too. With thousands of different skincare lines on the market, how in the world are you supposed to choose the right ones? Here are five things you need to think through before filling up your beauty drawer with new products.

Determine your skin type

Knowing your skin type is the key to finding the right products. The easiest way to determine yours is by simply washing your face and letting it air dry. After two hours, go to the mirror and write down how your skin feels. If it doesn’t itch or feel any different than before, your skin type is normal. If it’s shiny, your skin type is oily and you’re unfortunately prone to blemishes and breakouts. If your skin feels tightened, you have dry skin. If your skin reacted in all the described ways in different areas of your face, you have combined skin. Most of the beauty products have the type of skin they’re intended for displayed on their packages, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find the right one.

Mind the seasonal change

Your skin reacts to external influences such as air humidity, temperature, sunshine, the wind, etc. This means you cannot stick to one beauty routine throughout the whole year but you should adapt it to the current season. Rotate your beauty products in order to respond to your skin’s needs. How does your skin feel? Is it unpleasantly tightened, does it look dull or ashy? In the winter, skin is more prone to damage and can get extra dry: that’s why you need to make sure it’s well hydrated. Use heavy moisturizers, face masks with natural ingredients, and remove your makeup with cleansing milk instead of wiping tissues. With spring, exfoliating is a must, as well as using the SPF products. Summer is all about using light formulas, whereas fall can be stressful for your skin with its harsh cold, so focus on products that help your skin restore its natural oils.

Ingredients and potential allergies

The results of a recent U.S. survey showed that 54% of women find it important that their beauty products are all natural. This beauty trend is definitely gaining its momentum, with various chemical-free products on the market. Take your time to read the list of ingredients on the products, especially if you have some allergies. There are many beneficial natural components: if you cannot find the suitable 100% organic ones, opt for the formulas that are enriched with natural ingredients.

Beauty habits and your age

If you’re a lazy girl that’s not likely to change, choose the products that suit your lifestyle and beauty habits. This means you don’t need hundreds of different face washes, creams, toners, etc, but rather invest in simple multipurpose products you’ll actually use. Your age is also an important factor: anti-age formulas are very different from the regular ones.

Ethical aspects

Do you care about animal welfare or you feel comfortable with buying animal-tested products? Does the sustainability of beauty products mean anything to you, or are you not really shaken by how the beauty industry is impacting the environment? What’s your attitude towards the idea of fair-trade? These are some of the questions you need to think through before finding your skincare products.
With taking into consideration these five things, finding the perfect skincare shouldn’t be a problem. However, it might take a while: be patient and try out different brands until you find the one that suits you the best.
